Why This Data Matters
Research consistently shows that systemic factors continue to limit access to opportunity in rural and marginalized communities:
-
Persistent gaps in educational outcomes and employment opportunities indicate that structural barriers — not individual effort — play a significant role in long-term inequity.
-
Limited access to future-ready training and workforce development pathways remains a challenge across Middle Georgia, particularly within marginalized communities.
-
According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2022–2023), the poverty rate in rural areas (15.4%) remains significantly higher than in urban areas (12.8%). (Source)
-
The U.S. Census Bureau also highlights that rural populations — especially in marginalized communities — face reduced access to educational opportunities, further reinforcing cycles of disempowerment.
-
The Journal of Rural Community Development reports that economic insecurity and limited opportunity in rural areas contribute directly to feelings of disempowerment among marginalized populations.
